JeanJacques Mbabuike of New York City. Managing and treating chronic pain, such as that caused by severe arthritis, is where his current concentration lies. Dr. Mbabuike offers non-surgical treatments for a variety of orthopedic conditions, including discomfort in the knees, shoulders, hips, back, and more. He keeps tabs on his patients over time and puts out treatment plans specifically for them.
Dr. Mbabuike's formal education began at the Sophie Davis School of Medicine at City College of New York, which is known for its rigorous and fast-tracked Bachelor of Science/Doctor of Medicine program (now CUNY School of Medicine). The choice to major in medicine had to be made as a high school senior.
To combat the lack of underrepresented minorities in medicine, the Cuny School of Medicine's Sophie Davis Biomedical Education Program offers an accelerated curriculum to promising high school seniors.
To be accepted into this program, high school juniors should pay close attention to their grades in all of their required disciplines, especially those in math, science, and communications. Personal characteristics like maturity, compassion, and motivation are also evaluated in the program. Standardized test results, a strong grade point average, three written essays, and five letters of recommendation are all necessities for the admission process.
For his exceptional performance in these areas, Dr. Mbabuike was chosen to join the elite group of only 50–60 students admitted to the program each year. He was able to enter a 7-year program that would get him both a bachelor of science and a doctor of medicine. In three years, Dr. Mbabuike finished his undergraduate degree at City College of New York before moving on to NYU's Grossman School of Medicine.
After earning his graduation from NYU School of Medicine, Dr. Mbabuike completed surgical residencies at prestigious hospitals in the greater New York area, including New York Presbyterian Cornell, Westchester Medical Center, Lenox Hill, and Mount Sinai Beth Israel. Dr. Mbabuike had a wide range of surgical rotations, including those in general and orthopedics. During that time, he participated in and published cutting-edge research in addition to gaining substantial clinical expertise.
Dr. Mbabuike's current research interests lie in the holistic therapy of pain, namely chronic pain such as that caused by severe arthritis. Dr. Mbabuike is shifting his focus to aesthetic medicine as part of his effort to adapt to the ever-evolving medical industry. Dr. Mbabuike uses a patient-centered approach to aesthetics that is similar to his approach to pain management. Dr.Mbabuike has been able to further his career goals and promote a growth mentality by venturing into this new field.
Dr. Mbabuike always gives his all to his patients, no matter what field of medicine he is practicing. Effective pain management necessitates establishing rapport with people who are experiencing severe joint pain but who would prefer to avoid surgical interventions. This calls for calm deliberation and a determination to empathize.
Patients seeking aesthetic procedures often feel vulnerable and are looking for answers during consultations and operations. Dr. Mbabuike's interpersonal skills make him an asset in any profession that requires patients to open up about their most personal struggles or undertake invasive procedures.
One of the few Black guys in the medical business, Dr. Mbabuike is a first-generation Nigerian American who was raised in New York City. Dr. Mbabuike has a deep commitment to facilitating more frequent and less taxing journeys for people like himself. He thinks having a role model in the industry is crucial for getting more young black males like himself interested in medicine. Dr. Mbabuike's ultimate goal is to create a sustainable medical profession by laying the groundwork for future generations of doctors to follow in his footsteps.
Black men made up 3.1% of the national medical student body in 1978 but just 2.9% of students in 2019, according to a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine on the diversity of the national medical body. In 1978, Black men made up 3.1% of all U.S. medical students; in 2019, that number dropped to 2.9%, with a solid 0.5% attributable to medical schools at HBCUs.
Dr. Mbabuike and a number of other Black male physicians saw the need to develop an organization to help uplift and mentor Black males in medicine, so they called it the Black Male Initiative (BMI). The group's mission is to bring together students and Black males currently in the workforce to facilitate networking, information sharing, and problem-solving.
These initiatives have as their ultimate goal the increased representation of Black men in the medical profession. Dr. Mbabuike is motivated to keep doing this important work so that he may help reduce inequalities and promote equality in the medical industry.
Dr. Mbabuike's employment and involvement with BMI take up a lot of his time, yet he still finds time for a variety of interests outside of work. Sport is a huge part of his life, and he tries to stay active and healthy. Before the 2020 COVID-19 epidemic, Dr. Mbabuike had played in recreational basketball leagues for almost a decade.
With his time spent in amateur leagues on hold, he is able to focus more intently on his fitness and his interest in professional sports. He has a soft spot for the New York Knicks, the New York Giants, and LeBron James. In addition to his regular enjoyment of high-intensity exercises, resistance training, and his most cherished at-home activity, spinning classes on the peloton platform, he also enjoys doing all of these things frequently.
Dr. Mbabuike's interests in traveling, language study, and cultural exploration are all consistent with his commitment to leading an active life. Dr. Mbabuike also has a passion for theater and cinema, which he finds in plenty in New York City.
